Mmm, how delicious! Today we’re serving up traditional and scrumptious biscuits that no child can resist, in the shape of animal cookies. They’re brilliant, especially if you’re looking for a sweet table decoration for an animal party. Here’s a recipe that’s totally easy and practically foolproof.
Ingredients for Vanilla Cookies:
- Makes 10 large cookies
- 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
- A pinch of salt
- 190 grams of Type 450 flour
- 113 grams of soft butter
- 50 grams of white sugar
- 125 grams of brown sugar
- Vanilla extract to taste
- 1 egg
- Cling film
Let’s start by mixing the soft butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. It’s important to use both types of sugar to achieve a crispy exterior and tender interior. The butter must blend well with the sugar. The sugar crystals usually remain. Add a bit of vanilla extract and mix.
Once everything is well combined, add the egg and mix again. Initially, it might be tricky, but with a bit of patience, you’ll get the cream we want. Add the flour, bicarbonate of soda, and a pinch of salt to enhance the flavour. Mix everything well.
Roll out cling film on the work surface.
Place the dough on it, and roll it up like a giant sweet. Then put the roll in the freezer until the dough is firm.
In the meantime, let’s make the chocolate cookie dough.
Ingredients for Chocolate Cookies:
- Makes 10 cookies
- 100 grams of Type 450 flour
- 25 grams of dark chocolate
- 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 50 grams of butter
- 89 grams of white sugar
- 20 grams of brown sugar
- 1 egg
- Vanilla extract to taste
Start by mixing the soft butter at room temperature with both types of sugar. Mix well to get a homogeneous paste. Then add the egg and vanilla extract, mix thoroughly. Add baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, flour, and cocoa, and blend everything to make the dough.
Once the dough is ready, roll out cling film on the work surface, place the dough on it, press it slightly, and form the roll. Then put it in the freezer until the dough is firm.
Assembling and Baking the Cookies:
Ingredients:
- Vanilla cookie dough
- Chocolate cookie dough
- M&M’s or Smarties
- Mini pretzel cookies
- Sugar eyes
- Edible glue
Take the rolls out of the freezer, discard the cling film, and cut them into slices about 2 cm thick. Place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Leave a bit of dough from both rolls for decorating the cookies.
Note: Leave some space between the cookies, as they will expand due to the bicarbonate of soda.
Now let’s jazz up the vanilla cookies with a bit of chocolate cookie dough, forming animal paws and panda faces.
Animal Paws:
Take a tiny piece of chocolate dough, shape it into a thin crescent because we want to stick it on the vanilla cookie. Then make 4 small balls. Place the 4 balls on a flattened vanilla cookie, and below them, the chocolate dough crescent.
Do the same with the rest of the vanilla cookie dough. Once finished, bake them in a preheated oven at 180 degrees until the dough is golden brown, about 10 minutes. Remove, let cool.
Panda bear:
Take a piece of chocolate dough, form 2 larger circles for the eyes, 2 semi-circles for the ears, and a small dot for the nose.
Place the two larger circles in the centre of the cookie, side by side. Put the dot in the centre below the eyes, and the two semi-circles on top on both sides of the central circle. Press everything nicely and bake.
Cookies in the shape of monkeys, beavers, and deer: Cut the chocolate cookie dough into slices about 2 cm thick and place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper, keeping distance.
Beaver:
With the remaining vanilla cookie dough, make 2 oval circles for the cheeks. Place them on the chocolate cookie, press lightly, and bake for about 10 minutes at 180 degrees. After baking, let cool and then decorate.
Place sugar eyes on the cheeks, closer to the centre. In the middle of both cheeks, place a red M&M for the nose. Fix everything with edible glue and draw whiskers with a food marker.
Monkeys:
With the remaining vanilla cookie dough, make 2 circles for the ears and a larger one for the mouth.
Place the larger circle at the bottom of the chocolate cookie, then the two circles at the top on both sides of the central circle. Press everything nicely to bind with the chocolate cookie dough, and bake for about 10-15 minutes.
Once the cookies are done, remove and let cool. Add sugar eyes, which are glued with edible glue between the two ears, and onto the central circle. Then draw a mouth and nose with a food marker.
Deer:
With the remaining vanilla cookie dough, form a circle for the ears and a larger one, which we place in the middle of the cookie and press lightly so that it sticks well.
Bake the chocolate cookies for about 10 minutes. Remove, let cool, and decorate.
Take a chocolate cookie, 2 sugar eyes, 2 mini pretzel cookies, a red M&M, a black food marker, and edible glue.
Place the red M&M in the upper middle of the vanilla circle, then the sugar eyes slightly higher on the sides. Diagonally to the eyes on both sides of the cookie, place the pretzel cookies and draw the mouth on the vanilla circle with the marker.
